Welcome to

Academy House Garden

The best way to enjoy a garden is to live in it and note the daily changes. This is the first of several "day" tours of my garden. If you were to visit, I would walk you over the two acres, pointing out little hidden surprises. Instead of me tugging you back and forth from one plant to another, you can take the tour in little bites.

Halloween 2004 was a remarkable day in the garden. It was unseasonably warm, the skies were clear and the colors were brilliant.

Some of the first flowers of spring are the most exciting. Even before the ground thaws, some of the precocious bloomers are doing their thing.

Some perennials readily reseed. Most gardeners employ a combination of deadheading, pre-emergants, mulch and weeding to prevent seedling takeover. At Academy House, some seedlings are valued. Here are a few of them.

My biggest passion is Japanese irises. One frequent question is how to hand pollinate them. Here is a step by step guide.
